The backbone, or spine, is made up of 26 bones called vertebrae. The thoracic spine (mid-back region) consists of twelve bones (T1-T12 vertebrae). Vertebrae are separated from one another by soft discs filled with a jelly-like substance. These disks cushion the spinal column and put space between the vertebrae. The discs allow movement between the vertebrae.
As you age, the discs break down or degenerate. As they do, they lose their cushioning ability which can lead to pain if the back is stressed.
A herniated (slipped) disk occurs when all or part of a disc is displaced which may place pressure on nearby nerves or the spinal cord.
